On 18 March 2026, the EU-funded Horizon Europe projects REBORN, BIG LEAP and BATTERY2LIFE co-hosted the joint webinar “Building the Future of Second-Life Energy Storage in Europe”. Moderated by Prof. M. Sazzad Hosen of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the 90-minute session featured presentations from all three projects, followed by a roundtable discussion on the key challenges facing the second-life battery sector today.
The webinar covered three distinct but complementary technical topics. Giorgos Konstantinidis (BATTERY2LIFE, ICCS, Greece) presented BATTERY2LIFE’s work on cloud-based Battery Management System (BMS) architectures and their role in supporting the EU Digital Battery Passport. Josu Olmos (BIG LEAP, Ikerlan, Spain) then showcased BIGLEAP’s progress on State-of-X (SOX) and Remaining Useful Life (RUL) algorithm development, critical tools for accurately assessing the health and residual value of used EV batteries ahead of their second deployment. Finally, Andy Roux (REBORN, CEA, France) presented REBORN’s research into repurposed battery modules, addressing the engineering challenges of integrating retired EV battery packs into new stationary storage applications.
The session concluded with an open roundtable in which speakers and attendees discussed the current barriers to scaling second-life energy storage in Europe, from data trust and degradation uncertainty to regulatory alignment and economic viability.
