Second-life batteries can extend the value of materials already on the market, but only if they are reliable, safe and economically viable. REBORN, launched in January 2025 and coordinated by Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), addresses both the technical and the commercial side of this challenge.
The project is developing a technology-neutral, modular battery design for mobility and stationary uses. Assembly and disassembly are simplified through solderless mechanical connections and wireless links between the cells and the battery management system. Physics-based and AI algorithms, supported by cyber-secure cloud data storage, are used to define ageing indicators linked to the battery passport concept. REBORN also aims to speed up the screening and sorting of first-life packs and to test semi-automated robotic dismantling.
Battery Innovation Days is a valuable opportunity for the consortium to discuss this approach with researchers, industry and policymakers, and to exchange with other projects working across the battery lifecycle. On 11 November at 11:30, the Circular Battery Cluster will take part in the session “Which Place for Mining, Refining, and Recycling in the Circle Life of Batteries?”.
The event is organised by the Batteries European Partnership Association (BEPA) together with Battery 2030+ and the IPCEIs, and covers the full battery lifecycle.
