VUB

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is an Urban Engaged University in Brussels, the heart of Europe.

In VUB 20,000 students, nearly a quarter of them from abroad, are engaged in building their future and that of the world. With top-quality scientific research and customized education, VUB makes an active and engaged contribution to a better and more sustainable society.

MOBI – Electromobility Research Centre is the innovative research hub for electromobility in Europe and aims to make a strong contribution to a more sustainable society. With more than 120 specialists, we form a multidisciplinary team that supports the transition to a more environmentally friendly and electrified mobility and transport system. A unique mix of technical, environmental, and socio-economic skills is the strength of our research group.

In REBORN, the Battery Innovation Centre (BIC) of MOBI takes care of the project coordination, which is the largest academic battery lab in Belgium with battery cell, module & pack modelling and simulation, algorithm development, characterisation studies and solutions. Besides the full coordination, MOBI-BIC will lead the experimental work package, generating a database from battery studies. The research group will also develop different models following various approaches covering the whole usage life.

Another research group from the same hub, MOBI-EVERGi will perform a prospective LCA for the second-life battery packs, considering its advancements in the assembly and disassembly phase. In addition, the group will carry out economic assessments, in particular, to calculate REBORN’s levelized cost of storage. In this context, a willingness-to-pay study for second-life batteries is conducted.
